For example, focus on the details of your fondest memories of home. What were the elements that made it so resonant: the color on the walls, the way the furniture was arranged, the finishes of side tables and accessories like on picture frames, a favorite teacup, or a child’s handmade pottery bowl filled with beach stones? Was it the warm glow cast by the table lamps or the chandelier?

With this information in mind, begin by moving your furniture from the walls onto a 90-degree angle and floating two pieces of furniture together. The result: a cozy space to spend time with family or friends.

Consider the sun’s direction through the windows. Is there a spot that beckons for a chair and a table, a perfect respite on a busy day?

Think about how you’ve placed your tables and lamps. Is there an opportunity to bring attention to personal details such as cherished books and framed family photos? Even something simple as adding a scatter rug from your grandmother’s home, placing it under an ottoman and side chair, can conjure a sense of connection.  

Let your room tell your story. You’ll derive joy from the process and a deeper feeling of home and self. After all, we all yearn to feel like we belong, and there’s no place like home to build that foundation.
